GECCU awarded university bursaries to five of its members

In keeping with its corporate social responsibility, the General Employees Co-operative Credit Union Limited (GECCU) awarded university bursaries to five of its members. Each bursary is valued at three thousand dollars ($3,000.00).
The successful recipients were Ajomo Baker, Tuwhana Bowens, Keon-j Findlay, Léanna Laidlow, and Nauris Sam. The bursaries were presented to the recipients at a ceremony held on October 18, 2023, at GECCU’s Conference Room.

In his remarks, President of GECCU, Bro. Michael Sayers stated that GECCU is an organisation that understands the needs of its members and recognizes the value of human resource development; as a consequence, the credit union has responded by providing bursaries and scholarships to its general membership. President Sayers encouraged the recipients to make the most of the awards, noting that small amounts can go a long way in assisting with educational expenses.

Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mrs. Maxine Johnney noted that GECCU commenced its presentation of university bursaries in the year 2014 as part of the credit union’s 50th anniversary. The acting CEO said that three (3) bursaries were awarded then. She informed that the number of recipients has increased to five and that forty-eight (48) members have benefitted from the bursaries to date. According to Mrs. Johnney, GECCU has contributed approximately two hundred and five thousand dollars ($205,000.00) to this nation-building effort.

The CEO (ag) added that the number of applications per year has been increasing and she viewed it as a sign of members’ desires to advance themselves and improve the quality of their lives. She noted that in light of the increase in the number of applications and as GECCU is approaching its 60th anniversary, the current scope of the bursaries may be assessed. Mrs. Johnney congratulated the recipients on their hard work and concluded her remarks by underscoring that education is a vital tool for development and poverty alleviation. She expressed the hope that the bursaries will aid the recipients as they seek to enhance their skills in various disciplines.

Remarks were also delivered by Mrs. Joycelyn Blake-Browne – Deputy Chief Education Officer and Ms. Patricia Baptiste, Librarian at the UWI Global Campus. Bursary recipient, Sis. Léanna Laidlow expressed gratitude to GECCU on behalf of her fellow recipients.
